Lookup Unknown Numbers - Stop Telemarketing Calls

Mon, Mar 24th 2008

How often do you get telemarketing calls to your home or cell phones?  Do they constantly bother you every day or during dinner when you want peace and quiet?  Here are a few pointers to help reduce the calls, and possibly get them to stop.

Lookup Unknown Phone Numbers:  When you get these phone calls from telemarketers, their caller-id typically says that the name is private, unknown, or maybe out of state.  It may even be spoofed, which means they illegally change the name that shows up.  The phone number is often accurate though.  YOu can do a reverse lookup of the unknown phone number to find out who is calling.  Its best to use a free, user generated lookup directory for the most updated information.  Now you know who is calling you....

Put Your Name on the Do Not call List

The most effective and easiest way to prevent telemarketing calls is to register your home and personal phone numbers with the National Do Not Call Registry operated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). You may put your home phone numbers and cell numberson the opt-out list.  The FCC says that registration with the Do Not Call list will reduce the number of telemarketing calls you receive by 80%.

You can sign up for the Do Not Call Registry two ways:

  • The FTC's toll-free phone number is 888-382-1222 (TTY: 866-290-4236)
  • Online registration is available at the FTC's web site, www.donotcall.gov

Phillip and Cohen has several numbers listed. I just forwarded my calls to one of their other numbers. I am lucky to have 2 ip phones and I would like to know where they got my number to begin with. I will just tell all my family and friends and Drs and such to call me on the other phone. I kinda think they will stop. I can go and change it several times since they have so many numbers to choose from. Good Luck. Try calling them back and all agents are busy, will you please call back? Yeah right! Like I wanted to call them to begin with. Would suggest you forward to the local police dept, but that might get you in a lot of hot water. Maybe the white house?? All kind of numbers pop up to forward it to.

I get tons of these calls each day. I've given up reporting them, and my number is on the Do Not Call Registry. Doesn't work. Try having fun with them.....answer in a funny voice or accent; answer, then set the phone down until they give up and hang up; or, someone told me that if you answer and keep hitting the # key, it messes up their computers. Not sure if it works, but I've tried it before, kinda fun. Just don't let them drive you crazy...try to have fun with them. The Do Not Call Registry doesn't work, and, until Congress comes up with a plan to allow us to sue the caller, there's nothing you can do.

We get a lot of "hang-up-when-the-answering-machine-answers" calls that never list the caller (ex: 866-277-8886....I have tried to use the "free reverse look-up", but they all say the info is "available", but then demand a fee before giving the info. Are there any truly "free" reverse look-ups for these annoying calls?

You both are absolutely correct. I have come across the same problems you both have and more. Names & Numbers has phone numbers you can look up and find people and addresses. When you are continually getting harrasing phone calls with no number attached, you are probably using a cell phone(maybe Alltell). Everything has a price, how much is your peace of mind worth? There is a fee to change your number, but the company might do it for free if you have a copy of a police report indicating that you are receiving unsolicited, harrasing phone calls. After my sister's purse was stolen at an upscale Restaurant, while we were being seated! She was getting calls from all over the Country. She had to change phone number, cancel credit cards, you name it everything. If you get like four numbers with a #sign, or any informtion possible, you can file a complaint with the State Corporation Commission, Communications Dept., you can also file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office, Consumer Protection Division. Whatever you do. Do Not Be A Victim. There are unscruplous people out there who make their living by spaming people, stealing their identies, calling you and presenting themselves as a person or company, that is fraudulent. I know, I have had to protect my 84 year old mother from harrasing phone calls and people who get on the phone with her trying to get her to hire them, or purchase a service. If you do not know who it is - Do Not Answer - Let your voice mail, answering machine, collect those messages. I am sorry to paint such a glum view of life in Americia, but that is what it is right now, and by the looks of it, It is not going to get any better soon. I hope this information has been helpful to you. In the meantime, live life one-day-at-a-time, don't take on more than you can handle,be gracious and kind, what you dish out, always comes back to you one way or another. ###

Yes, please does anyone have an answer, I too am getting calls that say "unknown caller" with no numbers. I tried *69 but the number was out of the area. One of these callers even used some horrible profanity. Is there no way to get this stopped???
abc - Fri, Jun 5th 2009 Rating: +1
that is wonderful if you get a name or number on the caller id that is if you have caller id(not everyone has ) and to *69 the call is expensive and 99% of the time the info is not available how can you report calls that say unknown caller with NO # displayed they just keep finding ways to get around the rules so they can keep calling and cannot be reported

With AT&T - *69 cost $22-25 per MINUTE! One of my kids did this....only this one time! ;-) AT&T did take it off my bill though. Most Cell phone plans really do come with caller ID....so there's really no need to use *69
